5 Things Only People In Michigan Do

Michiganders are a proud bunch with unmistakable personalities all their own. Their state pride is unmatched, and you won’t find it elsewhere. Not surprisingly, residents of Michigan have their own special vocabulary and quirks you’ll only find in Pure Michigan.

Only People from Michigan:

  1. Use their hand to explain where they’re from--forget a map. Anyone from Michigan will show you on their left hand where they’re from. Because Michigan is shaped like a mitten, any good michigander knows exactly where on the “hand” their hometown is located.

  1. Drink pop, not soda--if you are looking for a cold, carbonated beverage while in Michigan, you’ll want to order a pop, not “soda” or “coke”. Don’t be surprised if you’re served Faygo.

  1. Know what a party store is--you can’t have a party without a trip to the party store, the place to buy your favorite beverages.

  1. Know what a yooper is, and go up north on vacation.  Driving up north usually means driving up I-75 and vacationing in a cabin in the woods or a cottage on the lake. Michiganders affectionately describe those from the Upper Peninsula, or U.P., as “yoopers”.

  1. Can properly pronounce Mackinac, euchre, Ypsilanti, and Sault St. Marie. Letters be darned--michiganders know the proper way to say these are Macinaw, yoo-cur, Ip-sal-an-tee, and Soo Saint Marie, no exceptions.

We could go on all day about all the wonderful things that define Michiganders, like their blind devotion to the Lions, their love of Vernor’s Ginger ale, how they like to enjoy Coney dogs and pasties, and crossing the bridge to visit Windsor. You know you’re from Michigan if you do any number of these things.

Michigan is known for its beautiful lakes. It is also one of the largest producers of apples, blueberries and cherries in the nation, as well as the second largest grower of Christmas trees. Michigan is the home to La-Z-Boy recliners and motor city.

And, if you’re a sportsman, you know that november 15th is a sacred day marking the beginning of deer season. Hunters looking for their little hunting paradise can find it for sale in Michigan, where deer are plentiful.

Common Electrical Issues That Electricians Are Masters At Fixing

According to the World Bank, 100 percent of people in the United States have access to electricity. Americans have had access to electricity for nearly 150 years, ever since the first commercial power plant was opened for business in the early 1880s. Even though electricity is the driving force behind the World Wide Web, computers, smartphones, and nearly every appliance inside modern American homes, not too many Americans are familiar enough with electrical circuitry to even think about fixing electrical issues that arise in their homes. Here are some of the most common electrical issues in homes and how they can be fixed.

Light Switches Aren't Working

Most homes in the United States have at least 10 light switches spread throughout them. If just one of them goes out of commission, homeowners feel as if their entire homes are broken. A good way to fix faulty light switches is to take them out of the wall and reconnect the wiring behind them. In rare cases, light switches might need to be replaced entirely.

Flickering Light Bulbs

Although some people associate flickering light bulbs with ghosts or paranormal activity, light fixtures are usually to blame. After disconnecting power to the light fixture in question, screw everything together as tightly as possible and then see if the bulb continues to flicker when people walk by. If it continues to flicker, get a new light bulb. If these two fixes don't work, you might need to reconnect loose wiring behind the fixture.

An Entire Room's Electrical Devices Goes Out

In such cases, the most likely culprit is overloading your home's electrical capacity. Try connecting fewer items in the room in which all its devices go out. If this doesn't work, you might need to upgrade your home's capacity for electrical power. Fixing electrical issues in homes, even if they're simple fixes and the ideology behind such problems is basic, is something that most homeowners shell off responsibility to professionals.
