Organic Pest Control

3 Organic Ways to Make Your Yard Pleasantly Pest Free

During the warmer months of the year, outdoor activities are the most enjoyable ways to spend time with the family. Families can go out for a swim, play ball, have s'mores around the fire pit, or play on the swing set. However, warm weather means that pest populations are climbing, and the family might be at risk for tick, mosquito, or spider bites without some organic protection.

Controlling Ticks with Poultry

If there are wooded or meadow areas around the home, ticks might be a common sight. Ticks are voracious eaters and disease transmitters; they will go through several life and feeding stages before dying naturally. Backyard poultry, such as chickens or guineas, are excellent at controlling tick populations naturally and organically. They will also eat other insects and arachnids as well, helping to control other pest species. Families will also receive eggs in return from the backyard chickens, which is another wonderful perk.

Spraying for Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be a bit more tricky to control. They can fly long distances, and may be reproducing in puddles, water troughs, or bird baths nearby. They will colonize any sitting water- mosquitoes are true opportunists. Therefore, spraying an organic mosquito control formula is the best way to control them. Be sure to eliminate any standing water sources around the home, including pails that may have collected rain after a storm. Citronella is also effective when used while outdoors, but this will require bringing all candles, oils, and torches outdoors and setting them up every time the family goes outside; they generally won't cover large play areas, either.

Getting Rid of Spiders On Decks and In Yards

Spiders come out in droves during the evening hours, in search of the day's meal. Wolf Spiders are frequently seen scurrying through the grass, while Orb Weavers may take over an entire deck or porch as the sun sets. Lights attract bugs at night, which brings in many hungry spiders. In order to control these spiders, try using peppermint oil around play areas and the perimeter of the home, especially in areas that are illuminated at night.
Some pests can be rather worrying as they become more common during the summer months. Organic control is the safest way to keep their numbers low while keeping pets and children safe.
