As a martial artist, one thing I have trouble with is finding time to get in some workouts that aren't martial arts-related. Obviously I get plenty of cardio in with my TaeKwonDo, but I also like to work different muscles, work in some strength training, etc. Often I just don't have time for a 45 minute exercise program though, with all the other responsibilities and TKD practice I have to fit in. So when I heard about Mindy Mylrea's fitness dvds, I was thrilled! See, Mindy specializes in Tabata, which is basically a form of high-intensity interval training.
I received 2 of Mindy Mylrea's dvds for review; Intensity Overload: No Equipment Required, and Tabata With Toys. I tried out the Intensity Overload first. I like that you don't need any extra tools (or toys) with this one. The dvd has 6 workouts, which are right around 10 minutes each. The workouts are INTENSE! However, because they're only 10 minutes long, I can be sure to get 3-4 of them every week. I may not be able to fit in 45 minutes of exercise, but I can easily get in 10 minutes a few days a week. And I don't feel like I'm losing the benefits of a longer workout; research has shown that shorter, more intense workouts provide better strength and fitness benefits than longer, steady-state workouts!
The Tabata With Toys dvd is a lot of fun as well. There are 18 workouts on this disc, with options for body-weight-only, gliding discs, balls, and various other "toys". Each of these workouts is only 4 minutes long, so I can get 2 or 3 done in one day! I haven't tried all of them yet, but quite a few both with and without toys, and at this point, my favorite is the 30-30 Core. This is somewhat different from the average HIIT workout, because you work really hard for 30 seconds, and then boost the effort for the next 30 seconds. This is one tough workout, but it feels so good! I love how it not only works your core, but also gives your arms a great workout.
Mindy generously sent me another set of these dvds for a giveaway for my readers!!
