SFF #2-J and O Fabric Review!!

While furnishing your spring wardrobe, you may find yourself in need of a particular garment that only you could create. Many times I have a favorite skirt or dress that gets ripped or destroyed somehow, and I can not find a new one anywhere-so I make my own pattern and replicate it! If you're anything like me, then you're always looking for some nice fabric for that perfect garment. When I first started sewing my own clothes, I shopped at the local Wal-Mart fabric department. In the past few years, however, the selection, quality and value has decreased dramatically.

That's why I was so excited to find J and O Fabrics-an online fabric store with a ton of variety! From denim to corduroy, plaids to floral, they have it all!

I received yardage of the Junior Seersucker in Tan for my review. This is a very lightweight material that just shouts "Summer" and "warm weather". So, I decided to make this a special skirt that would complement any spring/summer outfit. While the pattern I used (rather loosely) is a basic 10-gore skirt, I made a few changes. First, I changed it to an elastic waistband, rather than the standard zipper. One, I just prefer elastic, and second-I hate doing zippers! I can, have and will continue to do, zippers, but it's my least favorite step in making a garment!

My second change was a little more dramatic, and actually came about by necessity. I misread the pattern, and only ordered 3 yards of fabric-forgetting that I add some extra length on since I am taller than the pattern is designed for. So, while I ran out of material lengthwise, I had plenty of width. So I decided to add a kick-pleat in the back, as that enabled me to finish the last 2 gores in 2 pieces!

It only took me a 2-day period to get the skirt cut out and sewed up, even with the changes. Even I was not prepared for how nice the finished skirt looked!

This will be the perfect skirt for the coming warmer weather, as it's so light and cool! And I love the tan stripes; I wear a lot of brown so this will match many tops in my closet!
