SGSG-Turtle Press Martial Arts Book Review!!

If you've been reading my blog for any period of time, then you know that I am very interested in Karate and the martial arts. My brother and I often practice and spar in the backyard, and I have a collection of instructional dvd's that I use regularly. While looking at various gift ideas for the holidays, I immediately thought of a company that I have previously featured, Turtle Press. Turtle Press is probably the largest martial arts DVD-Book publisher I have seen. They have a wonderful selection of books and dvds for all levels of accomplishment, and for many forms of the martial arts.

I received Street Stoppers for review, a book by Loren Christensen and Mark Mireles. I have previously read and enjoyed other books by Loren Christensen, and was excited about the topic of this book. The main reason I study karate is for self-defense and safety (it seems like every day you hear of someone being attacked, robbed, etc.) so this seemed like a good fit. (Plus, I have to admit, I am somewhat of a tomboy, and enjoy martial arts just for the beauty of the "sport"). Street Stoppers is "The Martial Arts' Most Devastating Trips, Sweeps and Throws". This entire book is full of detailed step-by-step photos to teach you how to use trips, sweeps or throws when in a volatile situation. At 288 pages, and over 600 photos, each step of each trip, sweep or throw is clearly demonstrated.

Coming from a military and law enforcement background, both authors have the necessary experience to teach clearly on this subject. Practiced studio karate may not help when someone tries to rob or attack you, but knowing how to trip your opponent, or sweep his feet out, will! Since getting this book, E and I have practiced some of the various moves, and have really enjoyed it. This would be a great book for anyone who is involved in the martial arts, or any person who would like to know how to defend themselves or their family.
If Street Stoppers isn't up your alley though, check out the other books and dvds from Turtle Press. All their DVDs are on clearance right now for $9.99; this would be a great time to purchase some holiday gifts for your martial artist friend, or get started learning karate for yourself!
