Outdoor Family Fun! #C2Play2Day

Have you heard about the Worldwide Day of Play? Sept. 24, 2011 is the official Day of Play, designed to encourage families to turn off their tv and play outside. I personally think this is a great idea; most people spend way too much time inside! With our family not having regular tv, we actually do spend most evenings outside together.

One of our new favorite outdoor activities is volleyball. The guys in the family recently put up a net out back, so we have been out there almost every evening the past month having volleyball showdowns. We like to switch around the teams a lot to make it even more fun. (Although the boys like to take on the rest of the family...I think it's a guy thing :) The younger children have really improved, and now this has become our favorite backyard sport.

I also like to take walks around the neighborhood in the evening. Usually the whole family doesn't come along, but there are always at least a few of us. While I walk for exercise in the morning, our evening walks are more for enjoyment and spending time together than anything else. This time of year we usually spot a few deer, and some have come very close. I especially enjoy walking towards dusk so we can watch the sun set. It's a beautiful sight from some of the hills around here!

Over the summer we set up a pool out back for the kids that they really enjoyed too. It's already cooling off here to the point that it would be uncomfortably cool in the water, but a pool is definitely on their summertime outside fun list! Even though it was just a small pool, the young children had a great time splashing around during the hot summer months.

One of my favorite sports to participate in is basketball (not professionally obviously). We have a little community park just a short walk away that is usually empty (at least the basketball court is). Over the summer we'll walk up in the afternoon; now we had to move the games to the evening. Whether it's a game of H-O-R-S-E, pick-up basketball or just seeing who can outshoot everyone else, we all enjoy it! Some of the basketball games get a little intense, so the younger children often opt to just swing or play on the playground when this happens.

These are just a few of our favorite family activities. How about your family? Do you spend time outside together, and what are your favorite things to do? Will you be participating in the Worldwide Day of Play? I know we will! Join in at the Clorox Play 2Day Pledge hub here,

  1. Great post. I didn't know about this Play Day. Isn't it a shame that kids don't play outside more these days? When I was little we were outside until it got dark. (I remember playing Horse too) But now I see driveways that have basketball hoops and no one is every playing there. Let's get out and play!
