I love games that make you think. I prefer to play something that helps you learn, or expands your knowledge in some way. I found just such a game while at CHITAG, called Trump This Word. The goal of the game is very simple, yet it requires players to actually think. Here's how it works: the "judge" reads the "trump word" off one of the cards. Each player tries to come up with a synonym. The back of the trump card has the best synonyms, and their respective point values, so players score points based on the word they come up with. If a player says a word that is not on the trump word synonym list, but the judge thinks that word is a good match...he/she can give that player however many points he/she thinks is fair! The better the synonym, the more points it is worth. Here's an example from the Trump This Word website:
Neglect 25
Leave 25
Desert 50
Vacate 50
Desist 100
Quit 25
Evacuate 50
Withdraw 50
Relinquish 100
Cede 100
How simple? The better the word (synonym) the more points are won."
As you can see, this is a really fun game! And the kids don't even realize they're increasing their vocabulary while having fun! I also like that the game is all played with a deck of small cards, and they're hooked on a carabiner. It makes it easy to clip on to my belt loop or purse strap, and have a game handy to play wherever we go! You know all those times you're sitting in a restaurant, completely bored waiting for your meal? That is a great time to play Trump This Word!
"Trump This Word was inspired when my girls were in the 5th through the 8th grade. They had to take the EOG’S (end of grade exams). Any of you that have kids in the public school system you are familiar with theses tests. The writing test was the focus on this particular EOG. My girls prepared for the test; the writing had to include good content plus lots of descriptive words. We seemed to be living in the thesaurus. I said, “There has got to be a better way”!! Low and behold Trump This Word was created as a fun way for my girls to increase their vocabulary and learn new and more descriptive words."
