My brothers and I have been trying to learn Karate for some time now. With all the traveling we do, it's just not feasible to attend classes right now. So, the best alternative we've found is using instructional dvds. Books are great, but there's so much you pick up on when you're actually watching someone perform the kick/punch, etc. A book only shows so much! So, I was thrilled when Turtle Press sent me the Beginner Karate dvd to review! This dvd features instructor Mike Reeves-a 7th degree black belt in Isshinryu Karate, and a 10-time World Champion and World Record holder in breaking. Wow! Definitely a qualified instructor! The dvd is 65 minutes long, and takes you step-by-step through the basics of Isshinryu Karate, inlcuding:
- Basic Terminology
- Counting in Japanese
- Making a fist correctly
- Basic Strikes (5 strikes)
- Basic Blocks (3 blocks)
- 9 Basic Kicks
- Fundamental Blocking and striking combinations (these are a lot of fun :)
- 10 Kumite (sparring) hand techniques
- 7 Kumite Kicking techniques (this was one of my favorite sections of the dvd)
- 3 level Kumite Defense Techniqes
This also has a special bonus program that introduces more advanced karate concepts.
I really enjoyed this dvd. Mike Reeves does an excellent job of giving detailed explanations to make sure you understand each step of each move. Each strke/block/kick is shown from different angles so you can see how it should look. As well, each move is shown in slow-motion, to make it easier to catch on to what is going on.
Here is a sample lesson from the dvd, instructing on how to do a Karate Backfist:
The dvd is fully indexed, so you can easily jump directly to the techniques you need to practice.
This would be a great tool for someone who wants to practice at home in addition to their class, or, like in our case, who doesn't have the ability to join a karate class.
Turtle Press also carries many other instructional martial arts dvds and books, and also offers dvd sets for greater savings.
Turtle Press is giving one of my readers their own "Beginner Karate" dvd!!
